23 months!

A week ago Tuesday, our sweet little baby turned 23 months... he can't be two in less than a month, can he???

 

A cute one, I thought, of him showing Daddy the monkeys in the book.  :)

And then the shenanigans started....

 

 I've been getting so frustrated (?) lately with how often socks are NOT on his feet any more when we're in a hurry and it's time to put shoes on and run out the door... 

 

 

 

 

But alas... why would you keep them on when you can have sock puppets, instead!

 

 

Happy Halloween!  A more fitting post will follow tomorrow of our pumpkins and adorable little scarecrow! :)

Summer 2013

Well the summer flew by in a blur.  We were ridiculous about posting... er... not posting, I guess.  I blame it on being pregnant... I'm allowed right?  The first trimester of this pregnancy seemed a whole lot worse than when I was pregnant with Asher.  I was EXHAUSTED... like all the time!  Also rather nauseous.  At this point of my last pregnancy I'd gained almost 8 pounds.  Due to having to make myself through much of those sickly days,  I'm currently negative four pounds this time around.  Poor Eric kept asking how many more weeks until I was done with the 1st trimester.  Thankfully that is all well behind us and I'm already into the 5th month! 

I got so far behind on everything we were up to this summer that I just kind of gave up on getting in posted, but there are so many fun memories of things we did as a family, milestones in Asher's little life, etc. that I didn't want to NOT get it recorded, since this blog is my personal resource every few ...er 6-8 months when I actually carve out the time to put something in his baby book.  Did you know there is a company (ies?) out there that will print your blog with pictures in a nice format so you can have it bound on paper as a family scrapbook?  Totally need to look into doing that annually or something.  Anyway... 

June

*Most importantly we found out baby #2 was on the way over Father's Day weekend!  Nothing but joy and thankfulness over that one!  

*Asher got his first hair cut.  I cried in my car in the parking lot of the hair salon BEFORE we ever went in.  It was just that I couldn't bear to cut off his little curls.  Our good friend, Jodi, cut it for us though and it wasn't anywhere near as horrible as I had feared. She was great with him (which I never doubted) and it was actually so much nicer to have the crazy gone.  But now three months later, we're in desperate need of another hair cut and I'm getting to see those curls again, so I'm relieved to know they weren't cut off for good.  :) 

This, folks, is what I cried over...

*Asher and I took a Mommy and Me swim class at the Y with our good friends Paula and Ethan.  Asher learned to LOVE water, to not mind having water splash in his face, to blow bubbles, to put his head back in the water, and to jump in from the side, among many other early water skills.  It was a lot of fun for both of us, and we've enjoyed the pool many times over the course of the summer!  He's almost TOO brave for my liking in the water now. 

*  The garden Rhonda bought for me and helped me plant as a Mother's Day/birthday gift bore it's first green beans.  I was sooo excited to have my first produce, and then... rather disappointed when week after week, I collected the exact same number of green beans you see here before you.  Yes, every week or two, I cooked and ate my four green beans, and learned an important lesson that two green bean plants will not on their own enable one's whole family to eat green beans in one sitting... ever.  :)   Eric has promised to build me some larger container gardens for next summer so I can plant a few rows.  Watering a little more often might have made a little bit of a difference though as well...  ;)

July

*July took us out to Rapid City over the 4th of July.  We camped with Lyndsey and Brandon (and Emerson!) up in the Hills and spent time with Grandma and Grandpa Dobbs visiting all sorts of fun places (like Story Book Island!).  Eric also got to scuba dive with his dad while we were camping!

 

 

*We also splurged a bit and bought ourselves a van!  This purchase proceeded our public announcement of our pregnancy and many had growing suspicious because of it, but I promise, I'd been nagging Eric to go look at them with me since our trip home after Christmas.  I'd told him I absolutely wanted one before our camping/10 hour road trip over the 4th.  That didn't happen, but not having it just may have convinced him. :)  We bought our Honda Odyssey the very next weekend, and we've loved it so far!  ;)

August

*Grandpa Dobbs came to visit in early August just to go to the Iowa State Fair with us... well that and to see Asher, of course.  :)   We had a blast as always at the fair!

*August was a bit of a whirlwind as well, because Eric was in charge, yes, you heard me, in charge of our church's 150th Anniversary Celebration!   Yes, Eric, who's been at the church for 6 years tops, but all that aside, he did an AWESOME job, the entire weekend full of events came together smoothly, and fun was had by all!  Here's a few pics to show off all his (and his committee's) hard work!  And a HUGE thanks to Grandma Anderson, for coming up for the weekend to help us with Asher so we didn't run ourselves completely ragged! 

The committee planned a fun carnival complete with inflatables, face painting, free popcorn and cotton candy, carnival games, a dunk tank, and free dinner.  They drew quite a crowd!  :)

After the carnival there was more adult/family geared entertainment: a Christian improv group, FishSticks, performed and Eric Samuel Timm (painter/speaker) er, well, painted and spoke. :)   Both were AWESOME.  Eric also helped organize a very meaningful church service the next morning to "Remember, Rejoice, and Rededicate" our church body.  Below is a pic right after he'd introduced the past members of the pastoral staff who returned to share memories of the church.  He and his committee really did a great job!  :) 

 





*Lastly, and I think we'll be mostly up to date, Asher and I took a trip down to Clarinda to see MY grandmas (and mom!) because Eric was off on a business trip and my dad was off fishing in Alaska!  Unfortunately my Grandma Anderson was on a cruise to Bermuda (lucky duck) but we had a great time catching up with my Grandma Herzberg and Asher adored hanging out at his grandma's house!

While home, Grandma took Asher to one of our friend's farm, where he got to hold puppies, pet goats, feed chickens, collect eggs, and sit in a tractor.   One of the many highlights of the weekend for him!  :)

After all of that crazy summer we were blessed to have a quiet Labor Day weekend at home with just the three (four!) of us resting and relaxing!  We also look forward to all the fun that Fall will bring, including some cooler weather, and God-willing a trip up to New York soon to see Eric's Grandma Dobbs (along with a quick visit to the nearby Niagara Falls)!

I wrote this post originally over Labor Day weekend, but never finished getting the pics added.  September flew by, and we actually just returned from our trip to NY and Niagara!  So keep your eyes out for that post as well!   We'll try and get it up sooner than later!

Grandma and Grandpa Anderson also stopped in for a short visit mid-September as well and took Asher to the zoo.  We'll see if we can't get a few pics of that up as well, because like I said... this blog really ends up being more than anything a family scrapbook for us!

21 and 22 months in the yellow chair

We just got his hair cut (for the 2nd time) today because it was getting a little crazy/mullet-y in the back...  :) 

Anyway, it's been a while since I've blogged at all, let alone about Asher's developments.   So for those of you who care, keep reading, for those who don't, feel free to duck out. : )

It's been such a fun last few months with Asher, if I were to sum up his development in the last few months in one word, it would be language, language, language!  I feel sometimes like I'm living with a little parrot.  He's producing more words everyday on his own, echoing the last few words of everything I say, and words he's known forever but which have never quite sounded right, are starting to sound right, i.e. water which used to be "ah" is now "ah-ter."  It's just been so much fun talking with him.  :)  

He knows about 8 colors, 5 shapes, and the letter O, which he points out EVERYWHERE.

Regarding interests,  he still loves playing with balls.  He surprises us with how well he throws and catches for still only being one! :) 

He's also obsessed at the moment with basketball hoops, and I am now significantly more aware of how many there are in our neighborhood, because he points them out constantly!  I always have to be in tune with things though, because "basketball hoop" sounds to me like he's saying "soccer soup" and while we don't watch much t.v. at all, his current fave is "Super Why" on PBS, and that one sounds to me like "soupy soup." A little too similar if I'm not paying attention to context.  Eric's trouble with context is that he thinks "Barney" and "money" sound the same out of our little guy's mouth, and he's often caught saying things like, "no, we're not going to watch t.v. right now", when Asher's trying to show him a penny he found on the ground. :) 

He likes playing with planes and trains, and the Fisher Price little people, building towers with blocks, playing his little guitar, and helping mom!

He's awesome at unloading the silverware portion of the dishwasher all by himself, and throwing away his diapers without being asked.  He likes helping with carrying laundry between rooms and adores when I let him help me wash the dishes.  He also loves attempting, emphasis on the attempting, to sweep.   Such a good little helper. :) 

Big news in the big boy department - we've successfully moved him into a twin bed!  :)   He loves it and the vast majority of the time stays in it. :)   There have been of course a few nights where we spend 15 minutes or so putting him back in bed, but that is not every night and it's not been excessive ever.  Last night unfortunately he rolled out of bed twice, though, and amazingly did not stir once, either when he fell out, or when we put him back in bed... crazy kid!   We're just grateful for one easy success, because our one week of potty training earlier this month was a complete failure!  BUT we acknowledge that he's still really young in that department. 

Anyway, I'm sure there's a lot I'm missing, but that's what I've got for now!

Exciting news!

 

Decided it was time to share our news with the world!  Looking forward to a brand new passenger in our new (to us) Honda Odyssey!  And Asher can't wait to be a big brother!

 

Anyway, I'm 12 weeks now, hoping to be through with all the exhaustion/nausea soon with the end of the 1st trimester here in a week or so!  Praying for that to be the case at least!

Not sure how much he understands yet, but when you ask where the baby is he points to my tummy, of course, there's also a baby now in his tummy and in Daddy's (which daddy isn't so fond of... you know when Asher pokes his belly and says "beebee").  :)  We couldn't be happier though!

20 months, 9 days

Have I dropped the ball or what?!  I told Eric we were a week overdue for posting Asher's 21 month post, and he informed me he was only 20 months last Monday.  Huh.  I've been telling people for weeks he was just about 21 months.  :)   Whoops! :) 

Anyway here he is at 20 months, 9 days in the yellow chair.  :) 

 
Plus a bonus one. :) 

What has he been up to lately? 

1. He's started mimicking about everything we say.  He'll repeat the entire alphabet one letter at a time if he doesn't get distracted by something else!  We'll have to try and capture it on video someday soon... but alas the second we turn on the camera he runs to the other side to try and see himself on it.  Really hard to get videos as of late!
2. I think he's got a vocabulary of about 100+ words, but there's still only about 15 that anyone besides Eric and I would understand. 
3. We've been working on the word "please" lately to curb some whining and he's getting pretty good at it.  Lots of "please, more, mommy." 
4. He's started speaking fairly consistently in two to three word phrases.  "please up"  "mommy, more cheese", "daddy home", etc.
5. Physically, he's mostly mastered going up and down one step, steps.  Our staircase is still too much of a challenge to do safely independently, but he stays upright going up and down one step locations. 
6. He tries his darndest to jump and sometimes I think he thinks he really is jumping, but he bends his knees, strains as hard as he can, and his two little feet remain on the ground.  Soon, he'll get it figured out, but for now, it's fun watching him try. :) 
7. He falls down a lot and falls off things a lot, mostly because he tries climbing more and more things all the time, tries running faster, forgets to pay attention to his feet... :)
8. He's getting more and more independent, everyday as expected.  He can buckle the upper part of his car seat now, and gets upset every time I forget and do it for him. 
9. He's more aware of how mommy and daddy do things and he doesn't much want to do things differently.  He much prefers metal forks and spoons over his plastic ones, wants to drink out of a real cup rather than a sippy, doesn't really much care for wearing bibs anymore... unless mommy puts one on too :), etc. 

...I'm sure there's more, but I'm also sure there are only about 5 people who find this interesting, so I'll stop now. :)

Riding Bikes

 

We had wanted a bike trailer for a while in order to ride around with Asher, but he was too small last year to really do it.  We had been gifted some money for one from Grandma and Grandpa Anderson last year, and finally got the opportunity to use it.  We didn't waste any time getting that thing hooked up and out for a ride!  It was a fun time, and we got some great pictures.

Also, this year Grandma and Grandpa Dobbs got Asher his very own bike, a Strider that he can walk with at first, and coast with later.  He was a bit unsure in the beginning, but he's getting used to it and having some fun!

 Asher is tons of fun right now, and we're really glad it is summer because we can do so many things outside.  Asher loves it and burns off plenty of energy, which is always helpful around bed time :)
